WAITARA.
THE FIRE BRIGADE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Waitara Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday, Superin tendent Canton presiding. The balance sheet, which was adopted, showed receipts for the year as £57 Os Sd. including a credit balance brought forward from the preceding year of £34. The ex- ' penditure amounted to £29 5s lid, leaving a balance in hand of £27 14s 9d. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Foreman, Mr. J. Jones; secretary, Mr. W. Spurdie; treasurer, Mr. A. J. Canton; auditor, Mr. G. Bird; executive, Messrs. C. Lemmir and Proctor, and senior qfficers ex officio. The New Zealand Fire Brigade Associai tion are holding their annual confer- ! ence and demonstration at Dunedin in I March and the brigade ’ hopes to send a | team. I SOLDIERS AND CIVILIAN CLUB. • 1 The complimentary social tendered to the ladies and others whose help has been cheerfully given to the above club during the year was well attended, Mr. Parry (the president) giving those present a hearty welcome. The evening was devoted to song and musical items, at the conclusion of which Mr. Parry returned thanks. In
the course of his remarks he made feeling reference to the loss the club had sustained by the death of Mr. Jas. Rennie, and also by the removal to Dunedin of Misses Rennie and Bland, whom he desired to thank for a gift of books, which would form the neucleus of a library. Mr. Parry also announced that the club’s queen in the forthcoming carnival would be Mrs. Waters, whose husband had always been a willing worker for the club. Cheers were given for the "queen” and her husband. Occasion was also taken to present to Mr. H. L. Abbott the championship cup won by him, and a prize to Mr. C. H. Sampson for having made the biggest break (53) at billiards. GENERAL ITEMS. The children of the Waitara State School on Thursday last ran a sale of work, etc., in the school grounds on behalf of Dr. Barnado’s Home. There was a large attendance of mothers, and the children, with the help of some adult members, had no difficulty in extracting £2O from those present. It was reported this morning that some time during yesterday or last night the erosion by the sea had demolished the I ladies’ concrete bathing shed. There has I been danger from this for some time, but I willing workers some time ago erected groins, and it was hoped that the danger was past. 1 A Liberal League is being formed in Waitara to look after the interests of Mr. W. T. Jennings’ candidature. Mr. Butler, formerly of Marton, who has purchased the drapery business known I as the Big Store, successfully carried or. i by the late Mr. James Rennie, has ar- ! rived and takes over the business on Tuesday next. Misses Rennie and Bland, who have been in Waitara for the past 12 years, intend leaving for Dunedin in a few days. Tiny will leave behind a great number of friends.
