LABOR DAY SPORTS. THE HANDICAPS. •, A full meeting of all committees of the Labor Day sports was held in the Workers’ Social Hall, last night. All arrangements are well in hand, and given favorable weather, everything augurs well for a record gathering. As this Is the first sports meeting held on the re-cently-improved sports ground, the facilities will be greatly appreciated by competitors and spectators. The sports ground committee have recently pegged and rolled the racing track, and competitors may now train on the track by obtaining permission from the sports general secretary. The marathon race, for which 30 entries have already been received, should prove an attractive event. The route will be from the sports ground along Llardet and Pendarves Streets, via Eliot Street, to racecourse, entering the course by the High School entrance; along the track past the grandstands, and back to the park, via John Street, to the sports ground. Ample provision has been made to ensure an attractive programme for the children, races for whom will be continued throughout the day, ample prizes being provided for them. As usual, a baby show will be held nn the ground, also sideshows and guessing competitions galore. Included among the cycling nominations are competitors from different parts of the North and South Islands, and It is fully anticipated that previous track records will be broken. With the 4th Battalion Band and the New Plymouth Pipe Band In attendance, the musical part of the programme will be well provided for.
