EMPIRE’S FOOD.
WILL IT MAKE A MEAL? CONTROVERSY AT HOME. OFFICIALS DISAGREE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 18, 8 p.m. London, Oct. 17. Mr. Robert Donald has from the management committee of the Empire Exhibition, as a protest against the attitude of the management towards the use of Imperial foodstuffs in the restaurant attached to the exhibition. The committee turned down Major Belcher’s recommendation that the restaurant should use nothing but Imperial produce, alleging that such a course was impracticable and the general manager informed Major B.elcher that the wishes of the Dominions should be followed as far as possible. This was followed up by a memorandum from the Board of Trade supporting the theory that the restaurant could not run without drawing on foreign supplies for meat, fish, fruit and cheese. Mr. Donald opposed going outside the Empire for supplies and considered that the Dominions were being treated as subordinates instead of on a basis of absolute equality. Mr. Donald also asserts the general manager stated it was impossible to get suitable timber within the Empire to fence the Exhibition grounds.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
