BOWLING.
PARK (HAWERA) CLUB. The Park (Hawera) Bowling Club was formally opened for the season under perfect weather conditions yesterday, and as the green was in good order a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. There was a good muster of members, and visitors were present from the Hawera, Stratford, Auroa, Pihama, Manaia, Patea, Wanganui and Palmerston North clubs. Prior to the commencement of play the president (Mr. J. M. Westaway), welcomed the visitors, who were hospitably entertained to afternoon tea dispensed by the ladies, while Renwick's orchestra gave a programme of music. Before the afternoon closed, Mr. S. Adamson (Hawera) returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. The match between the president’s and vice-president’s teams resulted in a win for the former by 189 to 173. The opening of the Waitara season took place on Saturday last, the usual match, president v. vice-presidents, being played. The attendance was large, and the green played well, despite recent rains. Mr. J. Blair (president) made feeling reference to the loss the club had sustained through the death of Messrs. Jas. Rennie. J. Mair, and McDougall. He said the banner matches in which the club took part last year proved to be very enjoyable, but the Gilmour Cup could not be retained in Waitara owing to the New Plymouth Club having tco many "top-notchcrs.” He also referred to the Improvements that had been made to the surroundings and the painting of the pavilion, and he hoped that the coming season would be enjoyed. Cheers were given, and Mrs. Blair thtew "kitty” and the game proceeded. The president's side proved the winners. The occasion was taken advantage of to present Mr. T. R. Ford with the championship singles medal, which he won last year.
