THE HIGH SCHOOLS.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools’ Board was held last night. Present: Messrs. J. S. Fox (chairman). S. G. Smith, M.P., L. A. Nolan, E. P- Webster, F. W. Atkinson, H. Trimble, A. E. Washer, and Dr. E. F. Fookes. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. Sladden and A. Morton. Junior high schools formed the suoject of a discussion, the matter arising out of a report presented by the secretary on the recent high schools boards’ conference at Wellington, when the -following remit was passed: “That in the event of junior high schools being established in the smaller centres, where there already exists both technical day schools and secondary schools, it is desirable that the junior school be attached to the existing secondary schools. ' and that the duplication that at present exists owing to the establishment of technical day schools should be abolished.” ’ The principal of the Boys’ High School (Mr. W. H. Moves), in the course of his report, said: “Tn connection with the proposed establishment of junior high schools in centres like New Plymouth. I would |recommend that the board make formal application to have one established here on the lines suggested in the remit adopted at the recent conference. It would T think, be advisable to arrange a meeting with the Technical College Board of Managers, with a view to discussing the whole matter. Even in tlrn event of the department deciding not to establish such ; a school, some arrangement for closer eo-operation between the schools might be agreed upon.” The matter of consulting the Technical College authorities as suggested was left with the chairman to confer with Mr. Moyes and call a meeting if necessary. Mr. L. A. Nolan moved: “That in the event of a junior high school being established in New Plymouth it be under the control of the New Plymouth H : gh Schools’ Board.” This was seconded and carried. LOAN FOR ADDITIONS. Mr. Smith notified that the Minister of Lands'had intimated his approval of the inclusion in the Washing-un Bill of the clause authorising the board to borrow from the Public Trustee the sum of £3200 for the purnose of enabling the additions being made to the boys’ school and the erection of a laundry block at the boys’ hoarding house. Mr. Smith added: “T have made formal anplication to the Public Trustee for the loan, and have also asked that I may be advised of the result, as earlv as possible, so that, if granted, your hoard mav make the preliminary arrangements now, ensuring that the building mav be completed not later than the end of the Christmas vacation.” GENERAL. The secretary of the Gid Girls’ Association (M’fis E. Andrews) wrote asking if it would be possible for the board to appoint a sub-committee to confer with Miss Macintosh and representatives of the association in connection with the girls* boarding-house fund. — Messrs. Fox. Webster and Sladden were appointed a sub-committee to meet the association. Replying to an application by the board for a £ for £ subsidy on a donation of £2O towards the cost of providing an organ for church services, which are held in the assembly hall at the boys’ school every Sunday during school terms. Mr. W. E. Spencer (on behalf of the Director of Education) stated that “as the instrument is obviously for use in connection with the hostel, the department regrets that a subsidy cannot be approved.” Reports from the principals of the hoys’ and girls’ schools intimated that school work, was continuing as usual.
