“CURES” THAT FAILED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch. October 5. Mr. Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment for £25 damages and £ll 12s costs in the case in which Charles H. Grace, farmer, sued Alfred Lewis, described as a masseur and therapeutist, for the return of a fee of £25 paid in respect of a written guarantee deafness in nine months. Lewis did not defend the action. William Knight, a farmer, was also given judgment, against Lewis for £3O in respect of a written guarantee to cure varicose veins. FREEZING WORKS AWARD. Wellington, Oct. 4. The freezing companies’ application for a supplementary award was called before the Conciliation Commissioner. As at Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin the Unions were not represented. A letter was read stating there was no dispute affecting the union, which was quite satisfied to abide by the present award. The matter was referred to |he court without i ecommendation. PENALTY FOR CRIME. Auckland, Oct. 4. In the Supreme Court. Colin Fisher, for theft of jewellery and money totalling £75. was sentenced to two years’ reformative treatment; Frederick W. Mitcham for breaking, entering and theft, was admitted to two years’ probation.
