EIGHT-HOUR-DAY CELEBRATED. Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received October 2, 11.25 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 2. The eight-hour-day was celebrated in fine feather by the usual procession. It was witnessed by many thousands, but it was not equal to previous efforts, only a small number of unionists participating. STRIKERS TAKE BOLD COURSE. Hobart, Oct. 2. A determined effort was made to blow up the railway bridge over the Kermandier River by the use of dynamite, making it unsafe for loyalists taking the place of strikers at the Huon Timber Company. Griveston. Eight charges were placed in the bridge, and all exploded except one. a train was ! about to cross the bridge for the daily i supplies of sleepers, when the instrucI tions were countermanded. THE INDUSTRIAL SITUATION. Sydney, Oct. 2. Speaking at the eight-hour dinner, the chairman, Mr. O’Reilly, referred to the seriousness of the industrial situation. and said that during the past year Labor had been fighting a losing battle all along the line, and the faith of the workers in Parliamentary action had been badly shaken owing to the
apathy of members of Parliament. “A LOAFERS’ PARADISE.” Brisbane, Oct. 2. The Government gagged the Unemploved Workers’ Bill through the Assembly. the Premier exercising a proxy vote for the Home Secretary. A number of members of the Opposition left the Chamber as a protest against the gag and proxy-voting. The measure is popularly known as the Loafers Pai adise Bill. ENGINEERS GO ON STRIKE. Perth. Oct. 2. The engineers have, ceased work as a protest against the new working weeK of 48 hours. INCOME TAX PROPOSALS. Melbourne. Oct. 2. Mr Bruce announced that the Government had decided to exempt bonus shares from the income tax, and had also decided to tax company profits at the source instead of when in the hands of the shareolders.
