CRICKET.
OPENING OF THE SEASONi PRACTICE ON SATURDAY, Western Park presented a very busy appearance on Saturday afternoon, when cricketers took advantage of the fine weather to indulge in useful practice. There was a splendid muster,, and the enthusiasm shown augurs well for the prospects of the game this season. The hulk of the players were members of the Western Park Club, but there was a good sprinkling of members of the Harbor Works Club, and also one or two Old Boys. The season was formally opened by Mr. Fred Bayly, .president of the Western Park Club, taking first stroke for an over, and thereafter the wickets were in constant use until late in the afternoon. It is too early yet to forecast the strength of but indications point to both Western Park and Harbor Works being stronger than last. year.
For next Saturday, it is hoped to arrange friendly matches with two country teams, in order to allow some of the new players to show their merit.
