CARD-PLAYING.
NEW PLYMOUTH ASSOCIATION. WIND-UP SMOKE CONCERT. The 1922 season of the New Plymouth Card Association was brought to a close on Saturday night with a smoke concert, during which the shields won for crib, euchre and for the grand aggregate were presented. All the competing clubs were well represented, the seating capacity of the Foresters’ Hall being well taxed. The chair was occupied by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., who expressed the regret of all present at the absence through bereavement of the president of the association (Mr. E. Whittle). In proposing the toast of the winning teams, Avenue Road and the Fire Brigade, Mr. Smith said they all recognised that the card clubs were doing good work in enabling tlieir memners to indulge in friendly games, while the interchange of visits gave them the opportunity of renewing and strengthening old friendships and making new ones. He then called on those present to drink the toast, coupling with it the names of Mr. A. J. Milliman and Superintendent F. Bellringer. Other toasts honored were: “Losing Teams,” proposed. by Mr. G. E. Blanchard and responded to by Messrs. S. Higgs (R.S.A.), A. Pearce (Kai Iwis), A. Elms (Fitzroy), F. Hellyer ‘(Lepperton), W. O’Donnell (Bell Block), R. Street. (Tarurutangi). G. Blanchard (Druids), and W. D. Rodgers (Railway), and the association’s poet, Mr. J. Johnston. The toast list was pleasanny interspersed with songs, etc., those contributing being Messrs. .1. Johnston, A. E. Martin (one string violin), *P. O’Connor, L. Smith, and P. Tunbridge, all being enthusiastically encored. Mr. E. Riding was the accompanist. During the proceedings the chairman, on behalf of the association, presented to Mr. Millman, as captain of the Avenue Road Club, the Haydon challenge shield for the grand aggregate for crib and and euchre and the Malone shield for euchre, while Mr. H. Inch, as captain of the Fire Brigade Club, was fhade the recipient of Mr. E. Whittle’s shield for crib. Mr. Smith cone-’‘ulated the winning teams on their success, anr» "heers were given.
