MENTALLY DEFICIENT.
CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS. SPECIAL CARE URGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The urgent need for a special school to give children instruction in their own and other children’s interest was brought before the Education Board by Dr. MbCredy, school medical officer. He stated there were a fair number of mentally-deficient children irr Dunedin schools who were classed at backward, and they retarded normal children. As most of these deficients would have to support themselves, they should be equipped as well as possible, and sound educational instruction would prevent their appearance later in courts, institutions, and mental hospitals. In many cases, too, these children exercised a bad influence on younger normal children, with whom they generally associated in school. He suggested a special school.
The matter was referred to a committee for a report.
