ENTERTAINMENTS.

WEST END SCHOOL CONCERT. An enthusiastic reception was accorded the youthful performers at the Empire Theatre last night, when the West End School children gave the concluding night’s entertainment. The building wa> •well filled, and the whole performance went through with a zest, the performers throwing themselves into their task with an abandon that evoked rounds of applause, encores being demanded in every case, and in some cases double recalls. This was -particularly the ease with the dancing by the little Misses Petersen. All the soloists —Misses P. Yardley, Ella Thomson, Emily Hoyle, Dorothy Coleman —were in good voice and freely responded to encores, several being given floral tributes. Mr. J. W. Lovell proved irresistible in his comic sketches, whilst the boy comedian, Gerald Hoskin, also amused. The standard 11. children gave their recitation charmingly. The second part of the programme was again devoted to the Blackbirds, and it went with a swing right through. The troupe reflects great credit on Mr. J. W. Lovell, who trained the Blackbirds. Mr. J. Hoskin, who has spared no pains with the organisation and coaching of the children for the dances, etc., and Mr. A. Coad (stage manager), and Mr. T. Petty, who was responsible for the setting, were the recipients of congratulations on all sides. Special mention must (be made of the Boys’ High School orchestra. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr. J. Garcia (chairman of the school committee) thanked all who had assisted towards the success of the concert, specially mentioning Miss Rita Sole, Messrs. J. Hoskin, J. W. Lovell, A. Coad, T. Petty, the school teachers, the Boys’ High School orchestra, and the -parents.
