PERSONAL.
At yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Otago Harbor Board, Capt. John Collingwood Mac Lean, at present master of the Union Steam Ship Company’s steamer Kaitoke, was appointed harbor master and chief pilot of ihe port of Otago. A large number of applications were received from all parts of the Dominion.—Press Assn. The death is, announced of an old and highly-respected ex-resident of Wanganui in the person of Mr. John Bennie, at the advanced age of 79. The late Mr. Bennie was a native of Glasgow, and came to New Zealand in 1862, some years afterwards going to where he commenced a successful brewing business. He took a prominent pa r & in local public affairs, and was elected to a seat on the Borough Council in 1890. He was also a keen sports enthusiast, and revived the Wanganui Football Club in the late ’eighties, and was one of the prime movers in establishing the Wanganui Bowling Club, of which he waa president for several terms. As a bowler he was excelled by few. and in 1893 was one of the four New Zealand representatives against Victoria. Deceased had been a resident of Wellington for a number of years.
