SHIP IN DISTRESS.
ROCKET SIGNALS SEEN. FRUITLESS SEARCH MADE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The secretary of the General Post Office received the following from the postmaster at Awanui on Saturday at 8 .p.m.: “Ship rockets seen off West Coast.” The following was received from the postmaster at Kaitaia on Saturday at 11.20 p.m.: “-Signals still being flashed from a boat in distress off Reef Point; have notified Whangape, who is now getting steam up on a tug, which will proceed to assistance in half an hour fifteen miles north of Whangape.” A message received to-day states: , “The Ohinemuri left Whangape at midnight and took a fifteen mile zig-zag course, burning five blue lights; very dirty weather and heavy mist; unable to see further than one mile ahead; captain reports from Whangape at 11.40 a.m. having seen no trace of -boat or wreckage. He will make another trip to-morrow (Monday).”
