THE DAVIS CUP.
PATTERSON’S VIEWS. THE CHOICE OF ANDERSON. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Sept. 7, 9 p.m. New York, September 6. Interviewed. Patterson said that in his opinion what Anderson accomplished against Tilden showed his judgment was not awry in picking him instead of Wood for the singles. Anderson, despite his illness and lack of practice, proved he had at least a ten to one chance of beating Tilden and Johnston, which, considering his average form, was all he might have expected. Wood, on the other hand, with all his steadiness, would not have had a chance against cither. Patterson added: ‘ Wood never makes any serious pretensions in regard to singles, but he is a wonderful doubles player. Anderson and myself have beaten him so often in singles that my choice was practically compulsory, and this fact is thoroughly realised by tennis followers in Australia.” —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE AUSTRALIANS PRAISED New York, Sept. 6. The New York press editorially comments enthusiastically on the plucky fight of the Australians for the Davis Cup against heavy odds and handicaps, such as Anderson’s illness. All the papers praise the sportsmanship of the team, declaring that it would have been a pleasure to lose to them. The Globe takes an interesting angle, declaring that the death knell of Australia’s hopes was sounaea wnen it 'became known that Brookes could not play. Even omitting the consideration of his superior generalship, Brookes’ presence would have braced the invaders to a marked degree.
