MINE DISASTER.
THIRTY-NINE MEN KILLED, ALL IN MINE PERISH. RESCUE IMPOSSIBLE, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 7, 5.5 p.m. London, September 7. The deaths in the Whitehaven mine disaster total thirty-nine. Twentyeight bodies have been recovered. Identification is difficult as the bodies were scorched and crushed by rock falls, many being identifiable only by their clothing.
London, Sept. 6. Hope of saving the entombed men in the Whitehaven pit disaster has been abandoned. Gas and falls of rock have foiled the rescuers. Twenty-five bodies have been recovered. It is feared the pit will have to be sealed.
