RUGBY AT HOME. In some illuminating comments on the Rugger season in Great Britain, Mercian, in the Athletic News early in April said: "The season of 1921-22 will probably be written down as a disappointing one so far as the Internationals go. There have been 'incidents’ and exciting finishes enough, but, weighi ig up the form of the men who have played in the matches, the year has been disappointing. No better proof of the calibre of the teams can be adduced than the fact that the champion side of the year is Wales, and no one who has seen the Welshmen in all . their matches can rightly claim that they are a great team. The value of the finest of their performances, namely, the overwhelming of England, was minimised by the weakness of the English team. The seventeen men who have represented Wales this season can go down to Rugby history as a good fighting side, a side that was very difficult to beat, but by no means a brilliant side, and one that can bear no comparison whatever with the wonderful teams that have done duty for them. Their strength has lain In a. powerful lot of forwards, who have not only been able to heel the ball themselves, 'but have been able to stop the other sides getting it, and that has been of immense value. The Welsh backs have shown little cleverness in varying their play to suit the need of the moment, but in defence they have generally done well.”
