THE DAVIS CUP.

THE AUSTRALIAN WIN. WOOD’S BRILLIANT PLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, Sept. 2. The Davis Cup doubles contest, between Australia and America, lasted 54 minutes, the Australian victory proving a tremendous surprise. The spectators rose to their feet and gave Patterson and Wood a remarkable ovation. Wood was the outstanding hero of the day, his placing shots and net play being constantly brilliant and frequently miraculous. Patterson was greater than he had ever been in doubles here. He was fre-' quently spectacular, but for the most part he was content to let Wood shine. Tilden fought a terrific battle, but found poor support in Richard*, who was unable to clear the net with hi* returns.
