SEAMEN’S DISPUTE.

SETTLING DISPUTES. SPECIAL COMMITTEE SUGGESTED. By Tetegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The request of the shipowners for setting up a disputes committee to discuss differences that may arise concerning seamen and firemen, was strenuously opposed by the Seamen’s Union. No such provision existed at the present time. The employers suggested that the committee should , deal with any matters arising out of or connected with the award, including questions relating to manning any vesesl or the carrying of any class of cargo. His Honour said it was absurd that vessels, should be held up through little dis- ■, putes that might occur at. any time. Time and again these small differences occurred arid had been settled by force majeure or other means. “Are there,” he asked “no other means of settling such small mat teis?” Mr. Young: We usually manage to settle thfose little matters among ourselves. No disputes committee will stop me doing this ■or that. His Honour: If you have a disputes committee in which both sides have a confidence, I think that would tend to stop a lot of these tiddly-winky trifles that probably cause more trouble than bigger matters. Mr. Young eaid that the principle looked all right, but would not work out satisfactorily. A dispute might occur at night, just before a vessel sailed, and personally he objected to being called out at one o’clock in the morning to settle a dispute. After some discussion the disputes cony mittee subject was dropped.
