COASTAL FREIGHT.

REDUCTION NOT LIKELY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 30. At the Arbitration Court to-day, giving evidence in the seamen's and firemen’s dispute, Mr. Norris S. Falla, general traffic manager of the Union Steamship Company, said that at the present time the company’s trade was very slack. They had’24 ships laid up, and in general steamers engaged in the timetable service were unable to obtain sufficient cargo to fill them and were running with only part cargoes. They had received requests from deputations of merchants and traders to reduce freights, which it was represented would reduce business. The company was not in a position to reduce freights unless they got their running costs down. Speaking generally there was no margin at present, some branches of the trade being held at a lose. They were unable to engage tonnage in certain trades by reason of the competitive rates.
