STRIKE IN AMERICA.
A TRAIN STRIKE SETTLED. MURDER ‘CHARGE PENDING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, August 29. The train-men’s strike on the ElginJoliet Eastern railway has been settled, the officials agreeing to move the troops further from the shops. A fifth suspect has been arrested and charged with wrecking a Michigan Central train on August 20. To-day all will be changed with murder. 'Washington, August 29. Concerning the strikes it is announced that President Harding wants Congress before adjourning to pass legislation giving him power to seize the mines and railways to protect the public,, should the emergency arise, though this would be only as a last resort.
TRAINS TAMPERED WITH. GRAVE DISCLOSURES MADE. MANY ENGINES UNSAFE. Received Aug. 30, 9.15 p.m. Washington, August 29. The inter-State commerce commission has reported to the Senate that full trains are being diverted to isolated railway sidings and coal cars tampered with and made unserviceable. The Department of Justice will act promptly and prosecute in cases of sabotage. The commission further reported that during July half the locomotives inspected were found to be defective, and one-fourth of these were declared absolutely unsafe for use. Complete inspection of the rolling stock is impossible owing to the strike, Mr. H. C. Hoover (Secretary for Commerce) reported that the Government’s task of transporting coal is especially difficult, since, the shortage makes it necessary that seventeen million tons weekly should be distributed, while the normal amount is only fourteen million tons.
