OUTBREAK OF FIRE.
IN ‘CHRISTCHURCH PRESS OFFICE. By Telegraph.—Press Association Christchurch, August 30. A fire occurred at 7 a.m. on the top floor of the Press Company’s buildings in the lithographic department, portions of which were badly damaged. The floor has no gas heaters or fireplaces, all the machinery being electrically driven. As far as is known no one was in the building. When discovered the fire, like that in the Times office last week, was confined to the department, but as the floors are concrete, little water penetrated the lower part of the building. The fire was discovered by a porter from Warner’s Hotel, who visited the office to procure copies of the paper. The damage is estimated at £7OO. The total insurances are £65,832. [This is the second fire recently in a Christchurch newspaper office, an outbreak having occurred in the Lyttelton Times offices last week.]
