DISASTER AT SEA.
PASSENGER SHIP SINKS. THREE HUKtDRED PERISH. ONLY SIX SURVIVORS. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. Santiago (Chile), August 29. The Chilian passenger steamer Itata has been sunk off the Chores Islands and 150 are reported missing. A later message states that 240, all on board the Itata, perished. Received Aug. 30, 5.5 p.m. Santiago, August 29. The latest reports show that 316 perished in the Itata disaster. Only six were rescued. The steamer sailed from Coquimbo with 250 passengers. She was heavily over-loaded and met rough seas, which damaged the rudder. The gale then caught the helpless ship, which from time to time was swept by enormous waves, and she took a heavy list and sank. Chilian warships steaming to the scene were able to rescue only six persons, who were clinging to wreckage.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
