WATERSIDE INCIDENT.
UNIONIST WITHOUT WORK. CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. A watersider named Joseph Clarke claimed £5 special and £4O general damages at the Magistrate’s Court from the local Watergiders’ Union and the secretary (H. Kirk), alleging that he was prevented from obtaining employment on the wharf. The wharf foreman deposed that Kirk informed him that Clarke was 7s fid in arrears in union dues, so witness understood Clarke was an unfinancial unionist and not employable. Kirk deposed that Clarke had been in arrears since the quarterly payments were introduced. Thirty members had been allowed extended time in which to pay levies. Clarke was the only one in arrears and did not seek work at certain calls on the wharf. The Magistrate (Mr. Meldrufi) gave a verdict for plaintiff for ,£3 6s 3d loss of wages and also witness’ expenses.
