SHOT AT POLICE.
AN INCIDENT IN THE BUSH. FIVE YEARS’ GAOL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, Joe Kauriri, a sturdily-built Maori, was charged with escaping from custody and discharging a rifle at the police who endeavored to arrest him. Kauriri was the central figure in a recent exploit near Raetihi. When Burrounded by three constables he opened fire with a rifle and the ploice took shelter behind logs and replied with revolver shots. Kauriri was -wounded and escaped, but gave himself up next day. The chief witnesses were four constables who took part in the episode. One stated he believed Kauriri could hav shot him, but the Maori did not on that occasion fire. Kauriri gave evidence. He said he did not want to shoot the police, but merely to frighten them so he could escape. Accused was found guilty. Mr. Justice Reed said accused had a bad record. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal.
