RE-NAMING THE TASMAN.
. THE ANZAC PROPOSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, August 11. Sir W. Edgeworth, president of the Australasian Association for the advancement of Science, said the proposal •to alter the name of the Ta man Sea to the Anzac Sea would probably form matter for discussion at the next meeting at Wellington in January. The association is the only body which speaks for New Zealand and Australia, and such a change would come appropriately from it. The matter would be dealt with by the geographical section. A JUDGE’S VIEWPOINT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 11. Mr. Justice Chapman, in a letter to the Press, strongly opposes the proposal to rename the Tasman Sea the Anzac i Sea. He points out. that the former ' was deliberately chosen on his suggesi tion and approved by the Admiralty, and is now on the charts of all nations. It follows the practice of commemorating the names of great discoverers, and there is a tangible reason for it, whereas Anzac is inappropriate inasmuch as it commemorates only some of those who fought at Gallipoli. It does not, for instance, represent the French soldiers there and. as such, would not recommend itself to them.
