AFFAIRS IN CHINA.
STEPS TOWARDS AGREEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Aug. 13, 5.5 p.m. Pekin. August 11. Sun Yat Sen’s flight means his elimination from the immediate present situation in China, although as leader of the Liberal element which is now organising Chinese labor he will probably exert a tremendous influence in future. Cheng Chiung Meng’s victory indicates further weakening of Chang Tsolin, and it is now likely that the north and south will compromise. As a result, Cheng Chiung Meng and Wu Pei Fu have agreed upon the principal points necessary for a national agreement. Cheng will insist upon a large amount of provincial autonomy being authorised under the permanent legislation now being drafted by Parliament.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
