THE DAVIS CUP.

AUSTRALIA v. FRANCE. DOUBLES TO AUSTRALIA. OTHER MATCHES DELAYED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, August 11. Australia won the doubles, 6—o, 6 —B, 4—6, 6—3, 10—8. The Australians easily won the first set. Wood’s arm appeared to be in good condition and Patterson played powerfully and confidently. In the next set the Frenchmen put up a much better fight and it ran to fourteen games, and though Cochet appeared to become tired and rather wild they rallied, and after six all had been called won the next two and the set. The Frenchmen maintained their advantage in the third set. Gobert had a similar misadventure to that of yesterday. He fell heavily twice, and was badly shaken up. A sharp breeze was blowing over the court and playing tricks with the balls. For a while the teams appeared evenly matched, but notwithstanding Gobert’s mishap, he and his partner proved too strong for their opponents. The fourth set was a hard-hitting contest. Each took games alternately up to 3—3, but Cochet then suddenly weakened and the Australians won three in succession. In the last set the French showed stamina, and returning to the struggle strongly, won the first three games. The Australians took the next four, playing with great speed. The French were unable to handle their returns. Cochet visibly tired, and Gobert covered the court for him. Games fell alternately up to the 15th. Both sides were weary, but playing desperately hard. The Australians then won the set by taking the last three games. Received Aug. 13, 5.5 p.m. New York, August 12. Rain at Boston caused a postponement of the Davis Cup play till Monday. The Spanish Davis Cup team has arrived. Jose Alonzo declared they were not afraid of the French, but were doubtful of their ability to conquer the Australians.
