HUNTING.
GATHERING AT WAIHI. POINT-TO-POINT MEETING, That great interest is taken in North Taranaki in the friendly contest of local horses and horsemen was amply demonstrated by the presence of about 200 people at the annual point-to-point meeting of the North Taranaki Hunt Club, held over the adjoining properties of Messrs. J. Cole and J. Edwin, at Waihi, yesterday afternoon. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr. L. A. Nolan, the position iu judge was ably filled by Mr. A. Alexander. As starter. Mr. J. Edwin got his three fields away in good order. Mr. G. N. Skelton gave every satisfaction as clerk of the course, while the secretary (Mr. E. L. Humphries) and other members of the club rendered willing assistance. The course, about two and a quarter miles, -extended round a low hill, then circled a flat and finished with a straight run of about 400 yards. In all 11 obstacles had to be negotiated, including four leaps over brush. The three events ,were well contested, and although the entries were small some exciting finishes were witnessed. The winners generally were those horses showing most condition. Horses were classified according to breeding and performances into three classes, for each of which a race was provided. Results: Third Class. —’Mr. L. Pepperell’s Billy (•!■ Pratt) 1, Mr. 'A. H. Halcomb’s Larrakan (E. Pepperell) 2, Mr. L. Pepperell’s Black Jack (L. Pepperell) 3. Also started: Mr. L. Newton’s Jess (C. Cole) and Mr. A. Adlam « Red Hazard (P. Parli). Larrakan and Billy fought out the race right to the post, BiUy winning by two lengths. ' Second Class.—Mr. E. Lock’s Manu Kouhi (J. Pratt) 1, Mr. E. Rooke’s Autograph (E. Rook) 2, Mr. Sampson’s Jet Black (L. Pepperell) 3. Also started: Mr. Barraball’s Mawi Mack (E. Cole) and Mr. G. Furze’s Waihi (H. Copestake). Autograph led all the way, but was beaten over the last fence, and in the run home Manu Kouhi won by three lengths. First Class.—Mr. Bertrand’s Cordon (L. Pennerell) I. Mr. P. Parli’s Whakamoa (P- Parli) 2. Mr. Edwin’s Encjrcle (E. Cole) 3. The only other starter was unable to finish. Cordon won comfortably. The following horses also qualified as mutters: Objector, Simon, Paul Pry. Paul Pry threw his rider at the first brush, but was later ridden the distance by E. Cupestake.
