NOTES ON- THE RACING
(By Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, Last Night. Following on a dull morning, the weather was perfect for the second day of the Grand National meeting, and the track was very fast. There was again a large attendance, but the totalisator investments showed a big drop. There were ’> 7 starters for the Woolston Handicap. Jn the Pink and Kilderg led to the distance, where the broken-winded Kilderg stopped. Then Deucalion came along and beat In the Pink by. a neck, with Blush two lengths away, and then came Kilderg. The winner’s performance was a good one, as he was a long way back in the early stages. Four of the six starters for the Hunt Club Cup provided a fine race. Ruddy Gold shook off Nicomar at the last fence and won comfortably, with Malincourt and Bill five lengths away. Indus had no chance when he fell, and Runwell, who also fell, tailed off. From the start the Beaufort Steeplechase was a shockingly bad race. In a field of ten only five got round, and one of them, Omahu, tailed off from the start, finishing a furlong away. Strathglass and Manawapango fell at the first fence, Manawapango being unlucky. He led for half the journey, and then came down at Cutts’, Romance following suit at the next fence. Waimai was in front when he came to grief at the sod wall, the third to last fence. This left Zeus in front, and, stalling off a challenge from Old Gold, he won by half a length, with Staff Officer four lengths away and Master Boris a bit further back. The winner was one of the outsiders of the field. For the Sumner Handicap, L Amour was fancied. Jazz made the running, but L’Amour caught him inside the distance and won bjtwo lengths, with Yankee Dan, who was always handy, three lengths away, followed by Sir Huon, finishing fast after a slow beginning. The winner looks like making a good horse. He has done very little work lately, and this method evidently suits him. There were 1G starters for the Grand National Hurdles, Volo, General Petain. Kohu and Kareao being withdrawn. Ngata was in great demand, with Paonui, Explorer and Gladfjil also fancied. Falstaff was in front for half a mile, when he made a bad jump and was nulled Ore Ore, Ngata and Bell Rock then showed the way, but Bell Rook was done a mile from home, where Ngata was in charge, with Ore Ore. Explorer, Fisher and Penury Bose handy. A little further on G adfnl joined in. Ngata. Ore Ore and Gladful was the order at the last hurdle, and In the run home Gladful wore the others down, winning by over a length, while Ore Ore caught Ngata
and got second place by a lengU>. Then came Poanul, Explorer, Whipcord and Penury Bose. It was a fine race tor two miles, hut, as was the case last year. Gladtul stayed too well tor his opponents. Ngata appeared to be in a bad wav when he pulled up. and McDonald dismounted and led him in, but the horse. was soon all right again. Thrace fell and broke a leg a mile from home, where Spook jumped the rails, landing Inside the course. L. G. Morris had a lucky ride on the winner, owing to A Wormaid and T. L. Held meeting with accidents. Borke’s Drift pulled up lame. Passionless. Will Oakland and Economist were fancied for the Avgust Handicap. Wlll Oakland and Civilform 'set a hot pace for nearly five furlongs, when Will Oakland was done and he finished last. In a good finish Passionless beat Royal Mac by half a length, with Kilreid a neck away. Then came Civilform and Golden. Bubble. There was an inquiry and the winner’s rider was cautioned for unintentional interference. He came over on Golden Bubble, who stopped Economist. The incident occurred at a critical stage. Bowan and Nautical were fancied for the Spreydon Hack Hurdles. Nautical ran off at the third hurdle. Bowan then went off, and shaking Mandrake off In the straight be won nicely from Blue Hall, with Mandrake third. Agnola met trouble when Nautical ran off. The Islington Handicap was a good race. Counter Atiack was la front early and led to the straight, where he retired, leaving Mazama, General Advance.. Porest Gold and Tenterfield in charge. A little further on Forest Gold was done. Foochow came on the scene at the distance and got UP In time to beat Mazama by a nock, with General Advance. Demos. Prince Martian and Tenterfleld close up.
