General Harington has issued a communique pointing out that the Greek forces in Thrace have doubled in strength within a fortnight and consequently the Allies, as a precautionary measure for the maintenance of th* neutral . zone, sent British and French cavalry to screen the frontier and concentrated troops behind same. Other reports state the Greek© are withdrawing from Chatalja and the crisis appears to have ended. Received August 2, 9.5 p.m. Athens, August 1. The Allied reply to the Greek Note emphatically refuses permission to Greece to occupy, Constantinople. GREEKS AND FRENCH CLASH. Constantinople July 31. An encounter occurred between Greeks and French, owing to the latter entering the Greek zone. It is hoped that the heavy rain, which has begun, will check a military clash. Athens, July 31. The Greeks will observe the Allied decisions regarding Asia Minor, provided they include the setting u;p of an nomous State and the safety of Christian©. Angora has requested Serbian, Polish and Belgian diplomats to open peace negotiations regarding Anatolia. France instigated this movement in order to weaken Bolshevik influence and promising the Kemalists a long period loan if they will break the Soviet.
