Two pilgrim trains going to Lourdes collided on the Villecomtal incline, near Audi. Forty were killed and at least fifty injured.—Aue.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received August 2, 9.5 p.m. Paris, August 2. The dead in the Lourdes pilgrim train smash include two priest©, two nuns and two crippled children. It is feared the death roll is heavier than the early estimates indicated. Both trains were full of passengers. One had almost negotiated a steep incline when the couplings broke about the middle and the rear part ran away, collided with the following train, telescoped carriages and derailed the engine and a number of coaches of the second train. The impact smashed the gas reservoir© and the Lamps set fire to the woodwork. A number of passengers were burned to death, and others were killed while leaping from the windows of runaway carriages.
