SEAMEN’S DISPUTE.
TROUBLE STILL UNSETTLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 29. The Paloona trouble hs etill unsettled. Mr. Young, secretary of the Seamen's Union, said the men want to make certain that the rating of each department will not be reduced. An attempt was made recently to reduce the manning of ships irrespective of the number signed on the articles'. He wants a clause to conserve the rights anticipated when the articles are signed. The Union Company state the proposal is a far-reaching one, and would prevent reductions of the stokehold crew if cne boiler was out of commission. The union was notified that the whole matter would be considered by the Shipowner*’ Federation at a meeting specially called. The Union Company offered to fully protect the men of the Paloona, •but the proposals were not agreed to, so there was no alternative but to cancel the sailing.
