MAIN TRUNK DANGER.

AN EMBANKMENT SUBSIDES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Taumarunui, July 29. A subsidence of earth under the Main Trunk line between Waimiha and Poro-o-tareo was observed by surfacemen in time to avert a serious train smash. The men noticed that a portion of the embankment on the left of the line had fallen away, and investigation showed the subsidence had formed a large cave under the line extending 35 feet back to the hills on the other side of the rails. There was only a depth of six feet of earth under the line forming an arch six or seven feet wide. It is believed the subsidence was caused by recent earthquakes. The cavity was immediately packed with boulders, and there was little delay in the service.
