MOKAU—AWAKINO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A ‘meeting of directors of the Mokau Dairy Factory was held on Saturday, July 22, Mr. W. D. Black be big in the chair. Arrangements were made with regard to laying a tramline for the conveyance of cream and butter between the company’s factory and the wharf. It was decided to cut down and wire in position at points where the river bank was particularly liable to scour away several flourishing clumps of box-thorn, with the object of affording protection in the future. It was resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to the Home agents who had so ably handled the company’s output during the past season. The attention of the Mokau Harbor Board is to be drawn to the fact that a certain launch on the beach diverted the tidal waters to such an extent as to cause erosion to the river bank, along the company’s property. Suppliers were requested to state the amounts of cream they could supply to the factory at« present, and to report to the manager each week, until such time as he judged there would be sufficient to warrant the factory running. The o.s. "Mahoe” ran into Mokau on the I 14tli inst. with a fpll cargo of merchandise : for Mokau and Awakino. After unloading at Mokau, she took in wool, then ran into Awa-l-’ino, unloaded, returning to Waitara tlie following day with a full cargo of wool. She is due here again any day. A football match. Awakino v. Maoris, was played at. Awakino on Saturday, July 22, resulting in a win for Awakino by 3 to nil. Mr. Geo. Bignell refereed. Haldane scored for Awakino. A football macth, Awakino v. Tongapurutu, will be played on Saturday. August 6. The Tongaponitu Football Club gave a most i enjoyable dtance in the Tongaporutu Hall on Friday. July 21. The hall’s capacity was taxed to the utmost, and all enjoyed themselves immensely. The excellent music was supplied hy Mrs. Jenson, and extras were played by Miss E. O’Sullivan in her usual good style. T aun pleased to report that Mr. Keith Black, of Awakino, who was injured on the football field a few weeks ago, has quite recovered. Mr. Noel Bignell and his little daughter are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bignell, TaumateMr. and Mrs. Townley, of Tongaporutu, left I last week on a holiday trip to Australia and On Saturday evening, July 22, Mr. Wood. M.R.C.V.S., delivered a most instructive and interesting lecture on the "ailments of stock.” The lec/urc was given in the Mokau Hall, and there was a large and representative audience, who much enjoyed the lecture. We are waiting patiently for that dangerous corner on the hill at Awakino Heads to he fenced off. There is a nasty sharp corner, and a. sheer drop of 100 feet on to the beach below. Nasty place for a full speed motor car nnd a restive horse to meet. A little attention is also needed on the hill at Awakino township. Mr. J. Northern, of Awakino, returned on Tuesday from a trip to New Plymouth. Mrs. S. Galvin has returned from New Plymouth. We are sorry to learn that her son Lionel, who had his foot badly injured same time ago by a horse falling on him, has had to go into the New Plymouth hospital for treatment. Mrs. J. Lowe is spending a few weeks with Mrs. J. Monk, of Awakino. A "novelty” dance will be held in the Mokau Hail on Friday evening. August 4, in aid of the backblocks Church Mission. We trust (i good crowd will attend the function, as it will be sure to be most enjoyable, besides being for a mast worthy object. The organisers are Mesdames Sole and Sheen. In the report of the Mokau school social, one of the most enjoyable items was inadvertently omitted, viz., a quartette entitled "Breeches,” by four pupils—lda Hansen, Olive Fincham. Terry Scott, and Dorothy Fincham, who ail looked very fetching as two little Dutch hoys and two little Dutch girls, in their baggy breeches, all patches of purple, pink and yellow, and the quaint costumes of the two Lonas. Special mention must be made of little Terry Scott’s acting in this item, it being admirable.
