Mr. French, a supernumerary officer, . deposed that Captain Carr handed him> revolver and without using it lie aged to make room in one boat for all the women paaeengers he saw. The purser, Mr. Borrows, gave evidence that forty Lascars crowded Ma boat. He did not order them out because he was doing other thing*. y; Mr. Brown, third officer, related tt thrilling adventure. He went into ’ engine-room of the sinking ehip a£d when descending the ladder he elippvd and fell to the bottom into deep waUir. He managed to struggle to the centre line of the ship, where the water *UBa only four feet deep and the thus found the ladder again end escaped. Returning to the deck he found aix or eight passengers who would not attempt to get into the boat, though it was quite possible to slide down the side of the ship. “We pushed them into the boat,” he added. Personally, he was in the water for an hour and a liAtf.
