FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE.
RETURN OF THE STRIKERS. TO FIND THEIR PLACES FILLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch. Last Night. Large numbers of unionists offered themselves this morning for employment at the various freezing works in North Canterbury. Some of them said that at a meeting of freezing workers on Saturday evening the strike was declared “off.” but many of the men found, on presenting themselves this morning, that their places had been already taken by free workers, and most of them were “turned down.” Tn anv case the decision to return ha? been left rather late. The works at Kainpoi of the North Canterbury Sheepfarmers’ Co-operative Freezing Company closed down last week, and two of the other works in North Canterbury are likely to finish the sea-son, so far as slaughtering is concerned, within a few days. It was stated by one company manager that although experienced slaughtermen are available there is at present no intention to change the “one man one cut” system, which was introduced to meet the new conditions. His works were already fully manned before this morning. POSITION IN HAWKE’S BAY. MEN REFUSE TO WORK. Hastings, July 24. A few days ago, fihe Whakatu freezing works offered to take the slaughtermen back this morning for about a month’s work to complete the season. Onlv one beef butcher turned up. It is believed the abstention is due to. union influence. There is a meeting of the union to-night, and more definite information is expected in the morning. Meantime waiting cattle are drifting off to the Wellington works.
