POWER FOR WAITARA.

INQUIRIES FROM NEW PLYMOUTH. REPORT TO BE< OBTAINED. At last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council a letter was received from the town clerk of Waitara inquiring the terms on which the council would supply his borough with electric power. The writer added that the minimum requirements at the commencement would be 65 kilowatts, but it was very probable that this would be largely exceeded ’ when the convenience of the service made itself evident. In a report attached to the letter the borough electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) said that, when the matter was previously before the council, his calculations had been based on a line of sufficient capacity to supply Messrs. Borthwick and the town of Waitara. In ‘ the light of present developments it would be necessary to review the whole • position and decide what the economical capacity of the proposed |ine should be. It would take a little time to prepare this and he would be glad to know if the council desired him to proceed with it immediately. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) said he thought • that they should get the information at once and he moved in that direction, Cr. J. Brown seconding. Cr. T. N. Blackball thought that the matter should be referred to the Electric Light Committee.’ A number of applications for power would probably be coming in, and he had received a number of inquiries as to whether power would be aavilable. He mentioned the possibilities of Lepperton and the supply of power to farms in that district. He I thought the council should be in possession of full particulars regarding costs and charges, etc., for power to various places in the district. The Mayor was of opinion that they should deal with each case alone. The motion was carried.
