TRAMS FOR WESTOWN.

THE PROPOSED EXTENSION. COST OF PREPARING ROADS. The proposed extension of the tramways to Westown was again before the Borough Council last night, when the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) presented estimates dealing with the work necessary to form or reform and metal the roads over which the proposed tramways will pass. The report stated: Since my last report of September 13, 1920, a certain amount of filling has been done in Tukapa Road which will be of use, and this being so a slight reduction in the earthwork edn be made. The recent reduction of the bonus, will not affect the estimates, as wages today are slightly higher than at the above date. In the following estimates it is to be understood the costs as given are for work not. included in the £57,000 loan. The position of the rails, as decided by the electrical engineer, is that the western rail will be laid six feet from the kerbline. This position can be maintained except when passing the high face near Western Park, where the toe of the batter will project. The path at this point must be Considerably reduced in width. The agreement arrived at when the matter was last considered was that the metalling was to be laid 12 feet, wide along the east side of the tramway track and for two feet along the western side of the track, this latter being for the purpose of banking the tram track. The following estimates do not include any kerbing and channelling or path work along the western side of tra in route: Devon Street (o David Street, 86 chains, earthwork, £525; metalling, £140; tarring, £239; total, £904. There will be a strip between the channel and edge of metalled road, which should also be metalled and tarred, the cost being estimated at £585. The total estimated cost is £1489. Nothing has been, allowed for constructing either paths or road between Barrett Street and Wallace Place, as it seems optional whether any work be done in this length, nor has anything been allowed for cutting back at any corners. | On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Rumball, the matter was referred to the Finance Committee.
