SCHOOL FOR WESTOWN.

SUITABLE SITE AVAILABLE. • BOARD TAKES ACTION. For some years past an endeavor has been made to secure a central site on which a modern and up-to-date school could be erected that would be adequate for the needs of the West End and Westown districts. Several sites have been under offer to-the department, but so far nothing has been done, and the sites are now being utilised for business and other purposes. It is now proposed to endeavor to obtain a school for the growing suburb of Westown, and at yesterday’s meeting of the Education Board the chairman (Mr. P. J. H. White) stated that he had received an offer of one of two different four-acre areas on the Standish estate, each side of Belt Road, for £l7OO. The Westown Progressive Association had agreed to find not less than £lOO towards the

The §enior inspector (Mr. J. A. Valentine) reported that the site was entirely suitable for school purposes, being almost level and in an area rapidly increasing in population. He knew that a section of one-fifth of an acre, a few chains from the area, was recently bought for £225, so that the price asked seemed quite reasonable. It was certain that in the near future a school must be erected there to take the place of the side school now conducted in the Westown Hall, a building not suitable for school purposes. He therefore strongly recommended that the site be procured at once. The chairman stated that they had the offer of a site of three acres, threequarters of a. mile further away from town, at £BOO per acre. He considered that the offer of the four acres was a particularly good one and the application had been forwarded on to the department. He expressed the hope that in the course of a few days a favorable reply would, be received.
