WORK FOR EDUCATION.

MR. P. J. WHITE’S SERVICES. Mr. P. J. H. White, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, prior to the conclusion of yesterday’s meeting, intimated that he did not intend seeking re-election to the position of chairman, and as that would be the last meeting at which he would preside he took the opportunity of thanking members for the loyal assistance rendered him during the two years of his chairmanship. It had been a most difficult and trying time, owing to the financial stringency and to the growing attitude of the department towards centralisation. It had, however, been a labor of love, and though he was vacating the chair, he would still do his utmost to further the cause of education. He expressed his thanks to the secretary and the office staff for their loyal assistance, remarking that he had had the unique experience of this board of having three different secretaries during his terin. He also thanked the architect and his staff, while he paid a tribute to the valued help rendered by the senior inspector and the inspectors generally; also to the Press. Mr. A. Lees, in moving that the board place on record its’ appreciation of the services rendered, to‘education generally in Taranaki by Mr. "Vyhite during his term as chairman of the board, remarked that the duties entailed the sacrifice of considerable time and money on the part of the chairman. He eulogised Mr. White’s work, particularly commenting on the entire absence of parochialism at the meetings, every member doing his best for the cause of education. Mr. H. Trimble, in seconding, hoped that Mr. White would consent to reelection for another term. Mr. H. J. Eaves considered that the people of Taranaki owed a debt of gratitude to the chairman for the work he had done. Other members spoke in similar strain and the resolution was carried unanimously.
