UNEMPLOYED SOLDIERS.
POSITION TN NEW PLYMOUTH. RELIEF WORK PROPOSED. The question of providing relief work for unemployed soldiers was briefly discussed at a special meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council yesterday. The Mayor stated that Mrs. C. H. Weston had .approached him on the subject of providing relief work for unemployed soldiers, of whom there were a good number in need, and had asked if £5OO were raised locally, whether the council would subsidise this and put the men on works where wages were the principal expenditure. He had asked Mr. G. E. Roper, of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, to meet him and discuss the matter, as he understood there were a lot of men out of employment. Councillors generally were sympathetic and favored the idea of providing suitable work. It was resolved that a committe consisting of Crs. J. Brown. J. Kibby and the Mayor should meet Mrs. C. H. Weston and Mr. Roper and report to the next meeting of the council, the committee also to nave power to act where necessary.
