DETAINED AT ’FRISCO.

WELLINGTONIAN'S PLIGHT. News by the latest American mail reports that Mr. Howard Nattrass, of Wellington, who left Wellington on May 9 by the R.M.S. Marama, on a business visit to the United -States, was detained at San Francisco, together with Miss Edith K. Strangman, also of Wellington, by the immigration authorities, pending an inquiry. Private information has come to hand to the effect that, after Mr. Nattrass had been in cable communication with Wellington, both he and Miss Strang■man were subsequently permitted to proceed on to New York. The San Francisco Chronicle of May 31 gave the following account of the affair: •Miss Edith K. Strangman, a pretty New Zealander, and Howard Nattrass, a wealthy automobile dealer, of Wellington, New Zealand, spent Memorial Day in an enforced sojourn on Angel Island yesterday, pending the investigation of their status to be made by a special board of inquiry. Miss Strangman was detained by immigration authorities on Monday, when friends whom she had expected to meet her here failed to appear. According to Nattrass. the inquiry is based on the fact that the girl came to America on the same vessel with him, and that she is engaged to marry him as soon as he can be divorced from the wife from whom he has separated. Both arc plentifully supplied with money. “There has been no wrong committed.” says Nattrass, “and I shall prove that to the immigration authorities.”
