Mr. Tom Pollard, who is well known throughout the Dominion, is reported to be rather seriously ill. He is to undergo an operation this week in a private hospital at Christchurch. Mr. W. K. Bolton, a member of the NZ. Loan and Mercantile Hawera staff, suffered a stroke last Friday, and is now at the Hawera Public Hospital lying in a serious condition. The term of Sir Walter Buchanan as a member of the Legislative Council expired last Friday. He has been reappointed, and on Wednesday was formally sworn in. Mr. R. Stout, nephew of the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, has been appointed his associate in place of Mr. W. H. Cocker, who has entered the legal profession. A vote of sympathy with Mr. Wm. Healy in his illness was passed at last night’s annual meeting of the Vogeltown Bowling Club. A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Dr. Edward Herring, a native of the Hutt. He was born in 1864 and was the second son of Archdeacon Herring. Mr. John Eaton, one of the pioneer settlers of the Wairarapa, died at his residence at Carterton at the age of 86 years. Born at Swansea, South Wales, Mr. Eaton came to the Dominion in 1857, taking up land at Carterton and Kokotau. In his younger days he was a director of the Taratahi Dairy Company and the Parkvale Dairy Company, and was a member of -the old Taratahi Road Board. The late Mr. Eaton was for many years « steward of the Taratahi Racing Club, and took a big interest in sport, breeding several racehorses, which competed successfully in his name. f The death occurred in Nelson last week of Mr. Herbert Innes-Jones, a much-respected settler. The deceased was a prominent bowler, and had attended the annual meeting of the Nelson Bowling Club on Wednesday evening, where warm tributes were paid to him, and regret was expressed at his forthcoming departure, circumstances having forced him to resume a faftn in the North Island which he had sold some time ago. After returning home Mr. Inhes-Jones was seized, with a paralytic stroke, and died a few hours later. He was a prominent churchman, and was a member of the Nelson Diocesan Synod.
