OPEN HATCHES.

A MATTER OF DISCRETION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 15, 10.50 p.m. Sydney, June 15. The general secretary of the Merchants JService Guild ha< made representations to the Government on behalf of the masters of the colliers Marjorie and Calava, who were arrested on criminal charges of putting to sea with the hatches off, and were found not guilty. The opinion was expressed that the State should reimburse the masters to the extent of the bill of costs, as the matter of a vessel going to sea without its hatches in position was entirely one for the discretion of the ship’s master.— Aus.-N.Z.
