BIRTHDAY HONORS.

The Governor-General has announced that His Majesty has been graciously pleased, on the occasion of his birthday, to confer the following honors m recognition of distinguished service:—s K.B.E. —Dr. M. Poroare. Knight Bachelor.—The Hon. W. C. F. Carncross, Speaker of the Legislative Council. C.M.G.—Mr. Joseph Firth, formerly headmaster of Wellington College. I.S.O.—Mr. John Donovan, ex-Com-* missioner of Police. Sir Maui Pomare is a Minister ofj the Cabinet without portfolio, as representative of the native race. He was l>om at Pahou, Taranaki, on January 13, 1876. He was educated at the Boys’ High School at Christchurch and at Te Aute College, and studied for medicine. He took his M.D. degree at Chicago, and in 1901 he was appointed a Government health officer to the Maoris. As a health officer he has rendered splendid services, and he is & familiar figure in the House. Sir Walter Carncross itf well known throughout Taranaki. He is proprietor of the Eitharn Argus and is a prominent figure in the activities of the South Taranaki town. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1903, and is now its distinguished leader. /
