NEW CUSTOMS DUTIES.
IN FORCE THIS WEEK. V SEVERAL REDUCTIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Customs tariff on several lines of goods was reduced as from yesterday in accordance with the provisions of the Customs Duties Amendment Act passed last session. It is stated that as a result of the pending reduction a large quantity of goods that in the usual way would have been cleared during May, have been allowed to re-: main in bond. Appended is a list of the goods affected and the changes that come into force in regard to the British preferential and the general or foreign scales of duties:— Textile piece goods, composed of silk, imitation or artificial silk or combinations thereof with one another or any other material, except wool or hair (not being worked, sewn or otherwise similarly worked) are reduced from 20 to 10 per cent, preferential, and from 30 to 15 per cent, foreign. Shafting is j reduced from 20 to 10 per cent, foreign. • Sparking plugs for oil engines, which have been subject to 10 per cent, preferential, are now free under that heading. Certain classes of machinery or appliances peculiar to the generation of electricity, etc., are now subject to 10 per cent, foreign, but are admit-, ted free under the preferential heading. Electric appliances for cooking, heating, etc., now carry 20 per cent, preferential and 35 per cent, foreign. Machines used in aerating liquids are ad-< mitted free preferential, and are charged 10 per cent, (foreign. Ventilating blowers and fans are free preferential, and carry 10 per cent, foreign. Grinding mills and similar machines, which were subject to 20 per cent, preferential, are now free, while the duty under the foreign duty is reduced from 30 to 10 per cent. Arms and fittings, which previously paid a duty of 20 per cent, preferential, are now admitted free under that head, while the duty on importations from foreign countries is reduced from 30 to 20 per cent. Screws for wood and castora for furniture, hitherto paying 20 per cent, preferential, are now free, while the rate under the foreign heading is reduced''' from 30 to 10 per cent.
