A London cable says the late Sir Thomas Birkin, a lace manufacturer, of Nottingham, left a fortune of £1,000,000.
Captain John Conduit died in Sydney Hospital, aged 104. He started his sea career as cabin boy on Queen Victoria’s private yacht. There is no change in the condition of Mr. F. B. Glasgow, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Rangiora, who met with a serious accident three weeks ago.
The Prime Minister’s Southland tour concluded yesterday, when he received a number of deputations at Invercargill! Mr. Massey was the guest of the Southland League at luncheon and left for the north by the express. —Press Association.
A London message reports the death of Mr. Rutland Barrington, the actor, who played an the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. " He afterwards was a theatrical manager. He was a contributor to Punch and wrote, among other publications, “Thirty Years of the Stage.” The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), who has been presiding at the Wanganui sessions of the Supreme Court, has been indisposed for the last two days through a recurrence of knee trouble, due to an accident which befel him prior to his visit to England. It is expected, however, that he will be able to complete the sessions on Monday. It will not therefore b e necessary for Mr. Justice Reed (who is at present in New Plymouth) to proceed to Wanganui, and His Honor proposes to return to Wellington during the week-end.
