MURDER MYSTERY.

CHINAMAN SHOT. BODY FOUND ON ROAD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, June 1. At a late hour last night the body of a Chinaman named Chow Yat, aged 62, w’as found on Lohgacre Road, five miles from town, with bullet holes in the head. The police investigations to-4ay have convinced them that it is a case of murder. The scene of the murder was a whare situated on a corner paddock of a market garden. It is evident that t! i man was shot in cold blood as he. walked to open the door in response to a knock. The wounded man must then have walked a few yards back again towards the whare, and then made towards a neighbour’s, leaving a trail of blood on the track. Finally he had evidently collapsed on the road, as a big pool of blood was there. Seemingly the murderer picked his victim up at this spot and carried him about 160 yards dowm the road, where the body was found with the legs placed together and the arnts folded across the chest.

The whole affair is shrouded in mystery. Stewart, the son of a nearby settler, declares that he heard four shots in quick succession. The victim was a most inoffensive man and had resided in the Dominion many years. He was at one time on the goldfields at Greyinouth, where he accumulated wealth. Probably robbery was the motive, though nothing is missing apparently. ROBBERY THE MOTIVE. EMPTY PURSE FOUND. Wanganui, Last Night. A post-mortem held to-day shows that Chow Yat received four bullets in the head and one shot behind the ear penetrated the brain. The police believe the murderer followed the victim and finished him off. Although it is still a mystery how the body reached the place where it w T as found it has now been definitely ascertained that the motive of the crime was robbery, for deceased’s empty purse was found on the road.
