AGRICULTURAL MATTERS,

THE TARANAKI SOCIETY. REMITS TO THE CONFERENCE. A meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held at New Plymouth yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. B. Grant (chairman), H. C. Sampson, R. H. Pigott, A. Turnbull, W. Dumba.il, N. W. Hilt, A. T. Moore, J. H. Allen, F. Dodunski, A. P. Lister, W. Hall, H. Salway, G. H. Bell, G. W. Browne, and H. H. Olson.

The Stratford A. & P. Society wrote, in reference to the conference of societies to be held at Stratford on May 16, stating that the following,.remits would be submitted by the 1 society for consideration: —’■ ? •

(1) “That the following scale of charges for plsKfing coWs under semi-official test be recommended: £lO 10s for the first eow and one guinea for every additional cow.”

(2) “That the question of commission charged for sale of land be based on the vendor’s equity.” The remit in reference to semi-official testing did not find general favor, and it was decided that the society’s delegates express no opinion on the matter, in view of the varying opinion of breeders. The following remits were forwarded by the Egmont A. & P. Association: (1) “That this association, together, with other A. & P. associations, resents the levy of the amusement-tax on members’ tickets, on the ground that A. & P. shows are held for educational purposes.”

(2) “That conference draw the attention of the Department of Agriculture to the spread of ragwort and Californian thistle throughout the country, and it further urges the Government to amend the Act in the direction of mak-, ing it compulsory not only to cut the weeds, but also to destroy them by burning.’

(3) “That conference requests the Government to considerably reduce the amount of the rateable value of A. & P. sh o wgrou nds.’ ’ No recommendations were made as to the action of the society’s delegates. The following remits will be put forward by the Taranaki Society: —

(1) “ That the conference be again urged to bring before the notice of the Minister of Railways the urgent necessity for improved railway facilities for the conveyance of stock to and from agricultural shows. It is felt that there is too much delay in transporting pedigree stock to and from shows.”

(2) A remit resenting the imposition of the amusement-tax on members’ tickets. (3) A remit having reference to the danger of cattle tick spreading to this district, on account of cattle being driven through from Waikato, via Mokau. The Stratford conference of the three Taranaki societies is for the purpose of discussing remits for the annual conference of the Council of Agriculture and other matters of general interest. The society’s delegates will be the president (Mr. Grant) and two vice-presidents. (Messrs. H. C. Sampson and W. Hall). A sub-committee was set up to arrange a euchre party and dance for the ladies of the committee.

Final arrangements for the winter show will be made at a meeting to be held on May 26.

An invitation will be issued through Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., for the Prime Minister or other Minister to open the show. Failing that, Mr. Smith will be asked to perform the ceremony.

A vote of thanks was accorded the following for donations: Messrs. J. C. Wright ( £1 Is), L. Ntewman ( £1), W. Hall (£5), L. Turnbull and Son (£3 3s), C. Dobson (£6 10s), H. W. Hosken (£5), A. H. Street (£1 towards luncheon), and W. H. Were ( £1 for the gen-1 eral fund).

The Canterbury A. & P. Association forwarded a remit with regard to the construction of the Department of Agriculture and the reconstitution of the board.—Received.
