STREET WORKS.
NEW PLYMOUTH OPERATIONS. The New Plymouth borough engineer s monthly report for April states: Ballance Street. —The formation has been finished and the gravelling is almost completed. Selwyn Street.—The work in this street is well advanced toward completion. Veale’s Estate. —Lorna Street: The formation has been graded ready for metalling. The footpath has also been gravelled. Calvert Road South. —This work has been commenced. The handrails have been fixed to the bridge and a drain cut along the western boudnary. The pathway has been delayed pending further decision of the council. French and Kitchener Streets.—Work in these streets is progressing. Lupins have been cut down and will be burnt off in Birdwood Terrace. The path has been cleaned up. Tar Work.—All second-coat work has been completed. '±ne weather has been so continuously bad that some risk had to be undertaken regarding the setting down of these coats. Sand is being prepared in anticipation of dressing several footpaths, the difficulty being that of getting the sand dry enough for use. The time will come when we shall be forced to instal a dryer, as it is next to an impossibility to get enough sun-dried sand or stone* for this class of work. The work of gravelling or re-gravelling paths is now in hand. Other Works.—The channelling along the east side of Devon Street, between Waiwakaiho River and Nonnanby Street, is completed. Cutfield Road North has been scarified and a light coating of metal spread, rolled and blinded. Massey Street has also been metalled. Several streets have been patched, many of which are practically worn out.
